MEDIOCRE PICTURES is an online photo journal, film portfolio, and blog I'd originally started 2 years ago as a project I called The Modern Artist. It's evolved a little since then, so it's getting a new face and a new name.
I'm an art director and filmmaker currently working in Berlin, which almost runs the risk of making me sound cool and like I have my shit together.
But I obviously don't, and I'm not convinced anybody really does, and I think that's great.
I used to be terrified of sharing work, and still often am. But I had a helpful realization sometime in my first year of work that no one actually knows what they're doing. Even the pros. Everyone just sort of messes around making educated guesses, follows their gut, and then eventually puts enough time or love into something to become properly good at it. Then, you just basically pray that someone appreciates your work enough to pay you for it. And that's also kind of the magic of it all.
So I realized then that if there is something you love to do, you should probably just go ahead and do it. I don't know if I'll ever really feel comfortable calling myself a photographer, a blogger, an artist or a filmmaker, but it's what I love to do. So I'm doing it. I don't know if I'll ever earn those titles or who's job it even is to give them out. But I think the point is to just create anyway.
So, here is MEDIOCRE PICTURES, the ongoing collection of films, photos, and writing I'm creating to make a living and to document my youth. :)
